  8.              A few tips on getting the most out of BIBL...
  9.  
  10.   o  If you have several databases, give the one you use most often
  11.      a name that sorts first in the list of your databases...that
  12.      will cause that database to display first in your selection
  13.      pick-list and can be activated by simply pressing RETURN
  14.      (or hitting escape). You can specify a database on the
  15.      command line, if desired: e.g., C:\BIBL>BIBL DEMO [return]
  16.      would load the demo database as the program started.
  17.  
  18.   o  Be sure to put a hyphen between terms used in your keyword
  19.      field.  BIBL considers anything with a space on either side
  20.      of it a 'word' when indexing. BIBL will index up to 9 'words'
  21.      in the keyword field.
  22.  
  23.   o  If you have a mouse, you can close this screen by clicking
  24.      on the small box in the upper left corner. Clicking on the
  25.      'scroll bars' will move through this file.  The same is
  26.      true for the internal file viewer (V on the Main Menu).

  28.   o  If you need to vary the order of fields in a particular
  29.      report, use User-Selects option under export. With this
  30.      option you specify which fields are included in a report,
  31.      the order in which they appear within a given entry, and
  32.      the order in which entries are sorted.
  33.  
  34.   o  Note that when you search without using an indexed
  35.      field (that is, you search by publisher, location,
  36.      full record or boolean), BIBL will first scan the
  37.      entire database and note the matching records. You will
  38.      then see the matches and be able to move quickly
  39.      between them.

  41.   o  If you want to sort your database by author (and within
  42.      author, by title):
  43.  
  44.      (1) run the BIX output option from the Export menu
  45.  
  46.      (2) use 'make a database' under the Maintenance and
  47.          create a new (empty) database.
  48.  
  49.      (3) via ASCII import under Maintenance, import the
  50.          BIX file created in step (1) into your new database.
  51.  
  52.      Database is now sorted. You can delete your original database
  53.      if desired.
  54.  
  55.   o  Enter data into your records just as you'd like it to appear
  56.      in subsequent export files (e.g., enter Smith, John A. for the
  57.      author, not John A. Smith).
  58.  
  59.   o  Data is stored in UPPER CASE in the various BIBL index files,
  60.      but you may use any case when entering search requests. Your
  61.      input is converted to upper case before comparison with the
  62.      index is made.
  63.  
  64.   o  If you should experience a problem with a particular database,
  65.      run the BRX program to rebuild the file.
  66.  
  67.   o  If you find you need to make massive changes to a particular
  68.      database (more than you can easily handle with BIBL's find
  69.      & replace function), remember you can dump a database to a
  70.      BIX file (option J under Export) and then process the
  71.      resulting ASCII (BIX) file with a word processor. Be
  72.      sure to save the BIX file as an ASCII file (see note
  73.      about WordPefect below). When you've finished, just import
  74.      the data back into a NEW database and when you're sure it
  75.      went well, delete the original.

  77.      WordPerfect Users: If you use WordPerfect to make your
  78.      changes, be sure to save the BIX file using CTRL-F5 not F7!
  79.      BIBL won't import a BIX file that's saved via the F7 key
  80.      (since F7 saves the file as a WordPerfect (extended Ascii)
  81.      document!

  83.   o  You can use the LABELLED OUTPUT option (under EXPORT) to backup
  84.      your database and the ASCII Import function to read it back
  85.      into your database. Since the labelled output file contains
  86.      only the data in each field (not the extra spaces or the empty
  87.      fields), the file is often 50% smaller than your *.DAT file.
  88.  
  89.   o  You can also back up your database with any of three
  90.      third-party archiving programs: PKZIP.EXE, LHA.EXE or
  91.      ARJ.EXE.  If you have one of these packages, just
  92.      put the program in your BIBL subdirectory (or in a
  93.      subdirectory that's in your DOS path). BIBL will use
  94.      the program to create an archive backup of your
  95.      active database and index files (Maintenance menu).

  97.   o  When you want to transfer records from one database to
  98.      another you can use the 'T' (for Transfer) option when
  99.      the record you want to move displays. This writes a
  100.      copy of the record to the ASCII file, TRANSFER.BIX.
  101.      (the BIX extension stands for BIBL Import/eXport).
  102.      Each time you press 'T' the record displaying is
  103.      ADDED to the TRANSFER.BIX file.  When you have put all
  104.      the things you want to move into TRANSFER.BIX, use
  105.      ASCII Import to read these records into another database.
  106.  
  107.      Tip: If you want to move a lot of records that have
  108.      something in common, use the [F]ull search option on the
  109.      search menu. Then you can move through the matches by
  110.      pressing F or B and transfer the desired records by
  111.      pressing T when they display.
  112.  
  113.   o  Registered Version:  You can select a group of records
  114.      to transfer to another database by using the BIBLIOGRAPHY
  115.      export option and choosing Labelled (BIX) output.  If
  116.      desired, BIBL will also delete records from the original
  117.      file after creating the BIX transfer file.
  118.  
  119.   o  You may modify field labels and field names if desired.
  120.      Registered version allows you to rename Author, Title,
  121.      Publisher, Location and Subject fields. Shareware version
  122.      allows modification of Location field only. BIBL.DOC
  123.      gives complete details...

  125.   o  Don't use a $ in your entries for the value field. Just
  126.      enter the value as a decimal number (e.g., 29.95 for
  127.      $ 29.95). BIBL will attempt to convert strings that
  128.      contain $'s into numbers but why introduce a problem?

  130.      Note that the only export file that will contain the
  131.      value field is the BIX file. If you need a printout
  132.      with value (for example, for insurance purposes), print
  133.      the BIX file out with a word processor.  You can also
  134.      ask BIBL to put value in an export file created under
  135.      the User-Selects option.

  143.      BIBL286 -  a version of BIBL compiled expressely for

  146.      MAKEBIX -  Convert ERIC, PsycInfo, MEDLINE, AGRICOLA,

  148.                 processes NOTIS OPAC (5.x or later) screen

  150.                 for import into BIBL.

  161.      this file.  Just be sure to create the file using an ASCII
